Stephen Hershberger

Stephen Hershberger, who was a member of one

of Lebanon County's oldest families, died about

four o'clock this morning at his home

19 North Sixth Street, following a comparatively

 brief illness of complications.

He was in his 89th year, and was active up until last Monday

when he was forced to take his bed. Since then his decline

was rapid and the end came peacefully as members

of the family kept a vigil at his bedside.

Mr. Hershberger was a son of

Abraham and Angeline Matilda (Meyers) Hershberger,

who were widely known throughout Lebanon County.

Abraham Hershberger was a native of North Annville

and conducted a furniture and undertaking establishment

in this city for many years at 613-617 Cumberland Street,

a business that was conducted by the Hershberger family

for seventy-five years. For many years Stephen Hershberger

was identified with the business establishment,

and upon its dissolution around the turn of the century,

he entered the employ of the

Bethlehem Steel company in a clerical capacity.

Despite his advanced years, Mr. Hershberger was in active

employment until about five or six years ago

when he was retired by the company.

Since then he maintained a continued interest in dally

activities and entered into the spirit of community

affairs with a vigor that often commanded the

admiration of neighbors and friends.

About six months ago his health began to fail.

Mr. Hershberger was a member of the Tabor Reformed Church

and served as financial secretary of the

church under the pastorships of Revs. Bourter and Bromer.

Fraternally Mr. Hershberger at one time was identified with the

Patriotic Order Sons of America and the Independent Order of Red Men

of which he was a. charter member. He was one of the oldest members

of the Hook and Ladder fire company.

His wife preceded him in death on his birthday August 2,

four years ago. Survivors are a son Henry H. Hershberger;

two daughters. Mrs. Elizabeth Care, wife of James Care,

and Mrs. Helen Beckley, widow of Howard Beckley,

all of Lebanon; thee grandchildren, two great grandchildren,

and three nephews, Stephen and Walter Hershberger,

 and Grant Koons, of Lebanon.
