Hannah (Hoy) Manbeck

Mrs. Levi Manbeck, daughter of Henry and Catherine

(nee: Leymeister)  Hoy, was born April 29th, 1820,

 in Orwigsburg, Schuylkill Co., Pennsylvania.

In the year 1847 she was united in marriage with Mr. Levi Manbeck,

with whom she lived in holy wedlock for 50 years.

Their union was blessed with two daughters: Celia, who,

for a number of years, cared tenderly for the aged mother,

administering to her comforts, and made her

declining days pleasant and happy;

and Mrs. August (Ida) Haefele, wife of Rev. August Haefele,

pastor of the United Evangelical Church at Barrington, Ill.

After their marriage in 1847, they emigrated to the state of Illinois

and settled in the city of Naperville, her late home.
At the age of 17 Sister Manbeck was converted to God

and united with the Evangelical Association, of which church

she remained a faithful member to the day of her death.

Her end came July 6th, 1907.
Her husband preceded her into the better world about 5 years ago.

She leaves two daughters, one brother and four sisters,

one of whom is Mrs. Jerry Leffler of this city; and four grandchildren

and a host of friends to mourn her departure.

Sister Manbeck reached the good old age of

eighty-seven years, two months and 26 days.

Our departed sister was of a retiring nature.

She did not herald her deeds before her,

but sought to do her duty as a Christian in every respect;

her influence was for good, her chief delight was to serve her God.

For several years she was unable to attend divine services because

of her age and infirmity, but in all these years she did not neglect

her family altar which was established many years ago.

In visiting the home and praying with her, which was my privilege,

in her last years and her last days, she always entered into

the spirit of the prayer and seemed to feel glad to have her

pastor bow with her at her long established altar.

In conversing with her a few days before her death she gave me the

assurance that she was prepared to meet her God in peace.

Thus another saint is gone from the scenes of earth to that

great company of God's redeemed who have washed their robes

and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

She rests from her labors and her works do follow her.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in College Chapel,

conducted by Rev. G. A. Manshardt,

 assisted by Rev. John Divan.
Pastor.

Manbeck Family Information provided by Hannah (Hoy) Manbeck's

Great-Great Grandson, Dan Haefele, September 2006.

This information was found in a Haefele

Family Bible by Dan's Grandfather in 1947.

Additional information provided is that Levi & Hannah Manbeck moved to Naperville, Illinois right after they were married and that they ran a boarding house for male college students attending what was then called North Central College. August Haefele was one of their boarders and married their daughter Ida after they both graduated from that school. Levi Manbeck raised crops on their property and traveled to Chicago, which was a day's journey via horse and wagon, to sell his harvest.
