Rev. Ward K. Klopp Minister of the First Congregational Church of Durand, Michigan From November 1940 - January 1948
Rev. Klopp came here from Hopkins, Michigan and previously a Presbyterian church in Grand Rapids. He also served the Vernon church during World War II, and Bancroft in 1947. From Durand he went to Morenci, and celebrated 50 years in the ministry at Merrill in 1962. He died in September of 1972 at the age of 80, in Florida. Memorial services were held at the Vernon church with Rev. Martin officiating and buried following in Vernon.
Shortly after the war he wrote that he was convinced that we live in a moral universe, and that men have the ability to reject evil and work toward harmony and justice. His sermon topics constantly expressed this view. During his tenure membership increased 25%. Physical improvements in the church included a new oil furnace, new stained glass windows, and new alter brass. He and Mrs. Klopp were the first residents of the former Conn home that became the parsonage in 1943, moving there from 303 Mercer. Weddings performed include the Phillips, Winters, Williamson', Perrin's and Randall's. He served a term as moderator of the Central Association and was also active in the Masons and the Rotary Club.
Of their three children, son John is memorialized here by our Gethsemane Window.
He was a freshman at University of Michigan in March, 1943 when he was stricken with an incurable brain tumor. His sister Gladys became Mrs. Walton Chalmers, and sister Lura Grace married Elliott Hirsch here in April of 1943. Members of the Klopp family were here when the window was rededicated a few years ago.
