pVT. John B. Hoy

John B. Hoy, veteran of the Civil War and one of this county's most respected citizens died at his home two miles east of Eureka at 9 o'clock Thursday evening April 9, 1908, aged 67 years, 10 months and 23 days. John Bigelow Hoy was born in Piqua County, Ohio

May 16, 1840. When quite a young man he removed with his parents to Illinois.

He was married to Miss Catherine Stumpf. To this union nine children were born, six survive.

The children are Mrs. Mary M. Troutman of Cimarron, New Mexico, William Hoy of Wellington, Kansas, Oscar Hoy of Chanute, Kansas, and Mrs. May Johnson, Mrs. Anna Forbes and Stephen Hoy of Eureka.

During the Civil War Mr. Hoy enlisted in the 41st regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry and served one year when he was discharged on account of disabilities received in the service.

Mr. and Mrs. Hoy came to Eureka in 1864 and had made their home either in town or on their farm near town since.

Mr. Hoy was a member of Dick Yates Post No. 50.

Mr. Hoy had been a suffered for a number of years and for the past two years had been confined to his home much of the time. He was a kind and indulgent husband and father and a respected citizen and it is with sorrow that the community learns of his death.

The funeral services conducted by Rev. I.C. Paugh, assisted by the local Dick Yates Post, were held from the family residence Saturday morning April 11th at

11 o'clock. Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Catherine Hoy

Mrs. Catherine Hoy, aged 88 years,

10 months and 13 days,

died Wednesday afternoon

at the home of her daughter,

Mrs. Anna Forbes, 702 North Main Street.

She had been a resident of this county since 1870

with the exception of two years spent in Arkansas,

Funeral services will be held from the

Methodist Church

at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Anna t. forbes

Anna T. Forbes was born March 8, 1869 Shelbyville, Illinois and passed away early Thursday morning August 14, 1952 at her home in Eureka at the age of 82 years, five months and six days.

Anna the daughter of Catherine and John B. Hoy, came from Illinois in a covered wagon in the fall of 1870 and settled here where she spent the rest of her life.

On December 27, 1896 she was married to Joseph Forbes who preceded her in death on August 13, 1904. To this union three children were born; Mrs. Jane Butler and Mrs. Catherine Wiggins of Eureka; and John Forbes of Pasco, Washington. Also surviving her are one grandson, John Moffitt of Casper, Wyoming, three great-grandchildren, one brother, Oscar Hoy of Fastoria, Texas; numerous other relatives and friends.

William David Hoy

William Hoy, died on Tuesday, March 27, 1928,

at the home of his sister, Mrs. Anna Forbes,

of North Main Street, at the age of fifty-seven years,

one month and fifteen days.

Funeral will be held this afternoon at the

Methodist Church at 2:00 o'clock.
Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Obituary

 

 

William David Hoy was born February 12, 1871. at Eureka, Kansas, and passed away early

Tuesday morning, March 27, 1928,

at the home of his sister, Mrs. Anna Forbes,

of Eureka, Kansas, at the age of 57 years,

1 month and 15 days.
 

Mr. Hoy completed the public schools of Eureka and helped his father in the butcher shop where he learned the butcher trade, some thirty years ago, going to Wellington, Kansas, where he continued the butcher trade.
 

In 1901 he was married to Mrs. Ida M. Waltcher.

He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, Ida M. Hoy,

adopted daughter, Mrs. Ethel Whitaker,

 a step-son, Oscar Waltcher, all of Wellington,

 beside his aged mother, Mrs. Catherine Hoy, of Eureka, Kansas, two sisters and two brothers,

Mrs. Mary M. Troutman, of Cimarron, New Mexico,

 Mrs. Anna Forbes, of Eureka, Kansas,

Stephen C. Hoy, of near Hot Springs, Arkansas,

and Oscar E. Hoy, of Fostoria, Texas,

 besides a host of other relatives.
 

His wife, Mrs. Ida Hoy, one sister, Mrs. Troutman

and his two brothers, Stephen and Oscar Hoy

were unable to come.

On the 12th of February of this year he took sick

and his sister was called to his bedside at Wellington,

Kansas. Then on the 6th of March,

Mrs. Forbes brought  him to her home in

Eureka where he passed away.
 

He has been a member of the Christian Church for several years, where he has been a faithful member.

He is also a member of the Woodmen of the World.

Funeral service, conducted by Rev. R.E. Foster,

was held from the Methodist Church, Thursday

March 29. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery.
