Obituary Mrs. Lillian Weigel
Mrs. Lillian Weigel Downen was born on September 10, 1914, in Hanover, Kansas. She was the daughter of Jacob and Anna (Miller) Weigel. In 1957, she moved to Phoenix from Independence, Missouri. She and her late husband, Roy Lloyd Downen, owned and operated the Downen and Holman Greyhound Kennels. They also raced Greyhound dogs for over 20 years in the State of Arizona. Mrs. Downen passed away on March 14, 1984 at Desert Samaritan Hospital in Mesa. She leaves to cherish her memory, one daughter, Mrs. Ruby Jo Holman, a foster son, Harold Holman, one sister, Emma Dammann, Blue Rapids, Kansas, two grandchildren, Keith and Jo Beth Lawson, both of Tempe, Arizona. Pallbearers: Eric Bromfield, Bill Smith, Keith Lawson and Ken Schoenwetter. Interment at East Resthaven Cemetery, 4310 E. Southern Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona.

Roy L. Downen
Roy was a welder by trade and worked during World War II at Hanford, Washington. He and his wife Lillie moved to Phoenix and trained greyhound race dogs for many years. Their daughter, Ruby Jo, who was a widow moved to Phoenix from Illinois with her two children and married Harold Holman, who had been their friend and trainer of the greyhounds. After the death of Roy, Harold and Ruby Jo continued their business.
