Fun Facts About The Ritter Family
The German language was spoken by the Ritter family until about the year 1848 when Joseph Ritter decided that henceforth his family should speak English for he realized then that English, rather than German, was to be the language of the country. Joseph Ritter is credited with building a school house on his farm. In the year 1851 he moved with his family and some relatives to Napoleon, Ohio, and took up a homestead in what was then a wilderness.
Wild life was abundant about them and venison was a common
dish in their humble log cabin.
He took possession of a section and a half of virgin forest land situated along the banks of the Maumee River. He was land poor and was forced from time to time to sell portions on his holdings to pay taxes.
Such was the fate of a farmer who had too few sons to help with the work.
The Ritter's were members of the Evangelical Association.
