Laura Jane Bockus

 

Laura Jane Compton, daughter of Buck and Martha Compton, was born in Osage County, Missouri, August 23, 1865, and passed away November 30, 1948, in Pawnee City, at the age of 83 years, 2 months, and 7 days.

She was united in marriage to Jasper F. Combs August 21, 1881, and to this union were born four children; Ann, who passed away in infancy, Ida Mae Seigal, who passed away at Checotah, Oklahoma, February 24, 1925, and Lucy A. Colson of Pawnee City.

Jasper F. Combs passed away September 24, 1887, leaving her with three small children.

On April 3, 1892 at Branson, Missouri, she was married to Charles H. Bockus. There were five children born to this union, William Ernest, John Alfred, Raymond and Orbian, who preceded their mother in death, and Gertie Ellen Schnepp of Pawnee City.

They came to Nebraska in 1907 and made their home in and near Pawnee City. She joined the Christian church in young womanhood and attended regularly when health permitted. These later years she had enjoyed many sermons over the radio.

She was a kind and loving mother and her sweet disposition endeared

her to all who knew her.

She leaves to mourn her departure, one son, Arthur Combs of Branson, Missouri, Lucy A. Colson and Gertie Ellen Schneep of Pawnee City, five step-children, 25 grandchildren, and great grandchildren, one brother, Martin Compton of Branson, Missouri and other relatives

and a host of friends.

Services were held at the First Baptist church at 2:30 p.m., Friday, December 3, being in charge of the service, the  Rev. Madison Reynolds the pastor. The Rev. Parnell of the Christian church assisting. Mrs. William Allen and Mrs. Chester Bloom sang, "Beautiful River," "All The Way," and "Many Mansions," Mary Hunley accompanist. The pall bearers were: Judge Charles Hurd, Olin Turner, H. A.. Booth, John Schumaker, Joe Brown, and Ernest Porr. The out of town attendants were: the Rev. and Mrs. Wilcox of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Bockman, Sterling, Nebraska, and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Johnson,

Table Rock.

Interment was made in the Pawnee cemetery.
