Herman Alka Malpert & Gelka (Gerdes) Malpert
Herman Alka and Gelka Gerdes Malpert sailed from Germany on the S.S. America and landed at Baltimore, Maryland, May 12, 1888 accompanied by four children: Luckea, George, Alka and Hannah.
Herman Alka was born January 19, 1851 at Westermordorf Ostfriesland, Germany. He grew to young manhood and was confirmed in the Lutheran Church there in1870.
Gelka Gerdes Malpert was born January 28, 1854 at Berummerfahn Ostfriesland, Germany. Her parents were Gerd and Johanna Gerdes. She was baptized here and confirmed in 1869 by Rev. Eiben at Hage.
Herman and Gelka married February 8, 1874 at Berummerfahn. After arriving in America they located at Sterling, Nebraska where Herman's aunt, Mrs. John Stindt, lived with her family. From here they moved to a farm northwest of Humboldt. In 1895 they moved to Febing, Nebraska now known as the St. John's Lutheran (Stone) church neighborhood. They became members of the church and all of the children were confirmed here. He purchased one hundred and sixty acres February 26, 1901 from Thomas Edmonds north of Humboldt in Benton Township (Bratton neighborhood). They built a five bedroom house and lived there until he retired. He became a citizen May 19, 1906. In 1920 they moved to Auburn to the Court House Addition near a German Lutheran Church, leaving the farm to be rented by the youngest son, Herman Jr.
