William "Bill" Ehm
William Karl "Bill" Ehm died at the Hays Medical Center -Saint Anthony's Hospital in Hays on January 17, 1996 at the age of 92. He was born May 2, 1903 in Stuttgart to John and Kunigunda Ehm. He was baptized June 1, 1903 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Stuttgart by Pastor H. Dahlke. Bill attended the Morning Star Public School District #27. He took two years of religious instruction at the church under Pastor O. Rossbach and was confirmed by Pastor Rossbach on April 7, 1918. Bill farmed until his retirement. He worked on his inventions and hobbies all his life and for many years was active in working with Indian Missions. He was an active member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church until 1989 when he transferred his membership to the First Lutheran Church in Phillipsburg where he was also active in the work of the church. He taught Sunday School most of his life taught many years in Bible Camps and was a licensed lay minister. Bill and Lydia Merklein, Prairie View, were married August 24, 1927 by Reverend F. Schardt. His son, Arthur Schardt, rang the church bell for the wedding. Lydia died February 10, 1972. On December 14, 1975, Bill and Gladys Stohs of Manhattan were united in marriage by Rev. Robert Rosenkoetter. Survivors include his wife, Gladys; a brother, Arnold and wife Minnie, sister-in-law, Ida Ehm all of Phillipsburg; sister-in-law, Sally Ehm, San Diego, California. Bill's favorite Bible texts are: Psalm 1 and 2 Timothy 4-6-8. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 20 at 10:30 a.m. in the First Lutheran Church with Pastor Joel Hiesterman officiating. The congregation sang "Be Still My Soul," "How Great Thou Art" and "Nearer My God To Thee" accompanied by Luella Zillinger, organist. Casket bearers were: Loren Grau, Dwight and Virgil Ehm, Paul Merklein, Arnold Vogel and Anthony Kirchhoff. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg. Arrangements were handled by Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel.

Obituary ~ Ehm
Lydia Maria Margaretha Anna Ehm was born to Wilhelm and Emilie Grote Merklein on January 30, 1904, at their home west of Stuttgart, Kansas, and departed this life on February 20, 1972, at the Norton County Hospital, Norton, Kansas, having attained the age of 68 years and 21days. Lydia was baptized into the Christian faith at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Stuttgart, Kansas, on February 14, 1904 and was confirmed in at Emmanuel Lutheran church on April 7,1918. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Stuttgart, Kansas, at the time death . During her life time as a member of the church, the Body of Christ, Lydia was faithful to her Lord and served as a teacher in Sunday School for 25 years. On August 24, 1927 she was united in marriage to William Ehm and they made their home west of Stuttgart, Kansas. Lydia was preceded in death by her father and by one of her sisters who died in infancy. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, William, of rural Prairie View, Kansas; her mother, Mrs. Emilie Merklein of rural Prairie View: one sister, Marie Starr of Phillipsburg, Kansas. She also leaves many nieces and nephews and friends. Funeral services were held at Emmanuel Lutheran church, Stuttgart, Kansas on February 23 1972 with the Reverend Duane Levin officiating. Music was by Mrs. Arliss Weinman and by the congregation with Mrs. Marene Levin as organist. Casket bearers were John Merklein, Merle Starr, Alvin Merklein, Rolland Starr, Scott Sheets and Arnold Ehm. Burial was in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Stuttgart, Kansas.
