Mrs. John Ehm Sr.

Mrs. Kunigunda Ehm, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Eltiste, was born December 14, 1868 at Burgsalach, Bavaria, Germany. Here she was also baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran church of Germany.

When she was about 14 years old, she came to America with her mother and youngest brother, and settled for awhile near Auburn, Nebraska. Both mother and daughter made their living by working as housemaids for other people.

Later through the influence of two older brothers, Mrs. Ehm moved with her mother to Phillipsburg, Kansas. Here she met her future husband, John Ehm Sr. They were united in marriage on February 26, 1889 in the Emmanuel Lutheran church, Stuttgart, Kansas. To this union were born eight children, five sons and three daughters. A daughter Louise, died in infancy.

In 1931, Mr. and Mrs. Ehm moved to Loveland, Colorado, and lived in retirement there. But after having lived in Phillips County for so many years they always considered it home. They returned to Phillips County in 1939 and made their home on the farm with their son, Henry. Here Mr. Ehm passed away on May 8, 1951.

After that Mrs. Ehm lived part of the time with her son, Henry Ehm, of Phillipsburg, and the rest of the time with her daughter, Mrs. Leonard Vogel.

As one of the county’s early pioneers, Mrs. Ehm with her husband went through the hardships that were common to poor people at that time. When they were first married, they could afford only a sod home. In later years God blessed them with much better circumstances.

Mrs. Ehm enjoyed good health nearly all her life. Early last week she felt very tired. She slept all day Tuesday and Tuesday night. She passed away in her sleep early Wednesday morning on April 6, 1955, at the age of 86 years, 3 months and 23 days.

She is survived by five sons; Henry, John Jr., and Arnold of Phillipsburg, William of Prairie View; and Alvin of Washington D. C.; two daughters, Mrs. George Vogel of Loveland, Colorado, and Mrs. Leonard Vogel of Phillipsburg; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Simmons-Olliff Funeral home and Emmanuel Lutheran church, Stuttgart on Saturday, April 9th with Pastor Herbert J. Schauer officiating. Interment was made in the cemetery of Emmanuel Lutheran church.

John Ehm Sr.

John Ehm was born, August 6, 1860, at Burkersdorf, Bavaria, Germany. Here, he was also baptized on August 13, 1890, at the age of 14 years he was confirmed in the Lutheran church of Burkersdorf.

When he was 18 years old he decided to go to America to which a brother and uncle had gone earlier. For five years Mr. Ehm worked for his uncle in Illinois, and then he moved to Missouri. Here he remained for only one year. Through an advertisement of Pastor Dilges of Emmanuel Lutheran church, Stuttgart, Kansas, he learned about the homesteading possibilities in the Lutheran community at Stuttgart. He decided to accept the challenge and moved to Phillips County in 1885. For several years he worked as a hired hand for the farmers in this area. With typical pioneer spirit he applied himself diligently and was able to forge ahead to become a successful farmer and landowner.

In 1889, he was united in marriage with Miss Kunigunde Eltiste. To this union were born 8 children, one daughter, Louise, died in infancy.

In 1931, Mr. and Mrs. Ehm moved to Loveland, Colorado, and lived in retirement there.

They often desired to go back to their old home in Phillips County. After having spent eight years in Colorado, they returned to Phillips County and made their home on the farm with their son Henry. Here, Mr. Ehm lived until he died, Tuesday, May 8th, 1951

at the age of 90 years, 9 months and 2 days.

Mr. Ehm enjoyed good health until 1948. At that time he was afflicted with dropsy. He recovered well enough to be up and around again for quite some time. In February 1950, he suffered a stroke and was bedridden until he died.

Mr. Ehm was the oldest living member of the Emmanuel Lutheran church at Stuttgart. He was for many years a member of its council.

He is survived by his wife, Kunigunde, his five sons, Henry, John Jr., and Arnold of Phillipsburg; William of Prairie View; and Alvin of Arlington, Virginia. two daughters, Mrs. Frieda Vogel, of Phillipsburg; and Mrs. George Vogel of Loveland, Colorado; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted on Thursday at Emmanuel Lutheran church of Stuttgart with Pastor Herbert J. Schauer officiating. Interment was made in the cemetery of Emmanuel Lutheran church.
