S. A. Johnson

Passes After Long Illness

Pioneer Resident of County Passed Away Sunday;

Funeral Services Held Wednesday

S. A. Johnson passed away at his home in Albion Sunday evening after a long illness. For some time it had been realized that he was beyond medical aid and every effort was made to provide for his comfort.

Samuel Austin Johnson was born in Pottawattamie county, Iowa, February 16, 1868, and died at Albion, Nebraska, November 13, 1938, at the age of 70 years,

8 months and 27 days.

The family moved to Boone county in 1875 and located on a homestead west of St. Edward.  Nance county was the Pawnee Indian reservation. Columbus at that time was a railroad trading point.

He was married to Esther Neese December 24, 1892. Four children were born to this union, Guy, of Fort Lyons, Colorado, Vern of Los Angeles, California, Edwin of Hollywood, California,  and Ivan of Albion.

The wife and mother died in 1908. He was married to Alberta Quiter in 1910, who passed away in 1914.

On the fifth of May, 1916, he was married to Mrs. Vern McQueen who survives him. Ten children were born to them, Florence, now Mrs. Chas. Loveland, of Central City, California, Leland, Ralph, Warren, James, Kathryn, Richard, Mary and Donald of Albion, and Ruth who died November 11, 1933.

Besides his widow and children, he is survived by five sisters and one brother, Mrs. Mary Russell of California; Mrs. Jennie Wilson and Mrs. Eva Barnica, of Big Springs; Mrs. Martha Johnson of Albion, Mrs. Moat of Spalding and James Johnson of Riverdale, California.

Mr. Johnson was a faithful Christian all his life and died as he had lived. He always sought to give value received and often times gave more. He will be missed not only by him family, but by the church which he served so faithfully. He was a deacon in the Church of Christ in this city and until his health failed was a regular attendant.

Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. W. Mersch of Davenport, Nebraska, and interment was made in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Obituary – Johnson

Esther Neese was born in Hamilton County, Iowa, thirty one years ago, the 22nd day of last September.

When only about a year old, her parents moved to this county where she resided ever since. Christmas eve of 1893, she was married to S.A. Johnson. Unto them were born four boys, the youngest being only a few days old. Death separated her from her family, Saturday, February 15th, a little after noon. Thus is left a sorrowing husband, with four motherless little children, a sadder condition hard to be conceived of. Yet there are sympathetic hearts and loving hands ready to minister and some way will be provided for till they can get adjusted to the sorrowful conditions.

The deceased gave herself to the lord and was buried with him in baptism, June 20, 1897, and has been faithful to her duties as a Christian ever since. Hence we sorrow not as those who have no hope. Funeral was from the Methodist church Monday afternoon, conducted by D. J. Poynter, and the body laid to rest in Rose Hill.
