Tee to Cup – By Phil Roche – Staff Writer

A note of sadness at this holiday time touches all of us who have followed

golf in the valley through the warm, thoughtful columns of Fred Rohrs

a man devoted to God, family, education and golf.

Fred, who wrote “Bogeys and Birdies” for 20 years for the Ontario Report,

died at age 71 last Monday.

A resident of Claremont and a native Nebraskan,

Fred spent many a happy hour playing the executive course

at Claremont and in former days hauled his clubs to

Ontario National and tramped around that 18-hole, par 71 layout.

He retired from the Ontario-Montclair School District in 1970

after serving for 32 years as a teacher and district director

 of child welfare and attendance.

Fred regarded golf as the ultimate game, a challenge to be played with fun-loving companions amid the beauty of fairways, flowers, trees, and nature at its finest.

He took neither the game nor himself seriously and spread fun

and friendship and warmth wherever he walked.

We in the valley will not soon forget Fred Rohrs,

a wonderful reminder of how life should be lived.
