First found in Wuerttemberg, where the name was closely identified in early mediaeval times with the feudal society which would become prominent throughout European history.

Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Johann Christian Schiller, who arrived in Philadelphia in 1749, as did Johann Ludwig Ernst Schiller in 1754; August Benjamin Schiller arrived in Canada at the age of 25 in 1783.
