Ida Ehm

Ida Novak Ehm, youngest of six children, was born June 15, 1904 to Charles Novak and Marie Glock Novak on a farm northwest of Logan. She became a child of God through Holy Baptism on July 3, 1904 with Pastor J. Pirner officiating. After being instructed with a class of seven, she renewed her faith by being confirmed April 20, 1919 with Pastor A. Meyries at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Logan, officiating. Her confirmation text was taken from Psalms 37:5 “Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in Him and he shall bring it to pass.” From this memory verse, she drew great comfort and inspiration, having a firm faith in Jesus Christ as her savior, to endure all the trials of her life with strength and courage. She was blesses by being the last of her confirmation class to survive. She worked in the Sunday school and served as superintendent for many years.

Ida lived with her parents on the farm until 1929 when she joined her two sisters in Denver, taking her high school and business training, graduating from Opportunity School with the Class of 1933. In 1935, the three sisters were called home by the serious illness and death of their father. Ida stayed with her mother on the farm until 1946. In May of that year, her mother suffered a vascular accident and was advised by her doctor to see specialists in Hays and Denver, but no help could be given. Two of the sisters stayed on the farm with their mother until she passed away in December of 1946.

In the spring of 1947, they went back to Denver, returning to Kansas in 1958 and resided in their home in Phillipsburg, which the sisters purchased in 1952.

In 1966 she was joined in holy matrimony with Henry Ehm at Zion Lutheran Church in Phillipsburg with Pastor Victor Anderson officiating. Henry passed away in 1982. Ida continued to live alone until the Lord called her home on August 17, 1996, having reached the age of 92.

Ida was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church for over 50 years, then a member of the Zion Lutheran Church until her death.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Esther Novak, Logan; niece and nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 22 at 2 p.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor’s Don Swanson and Ruth Swanson officiating.

The congregation sand “How Great Thou Art” and “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” accompanied by Alice Novak.

Caskets bearers were: Olin Bean, Virgil and Donald Ehm, Marvin Eden, Louis Novak and Warren Hoffman.

Interment was in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery, Phillips County.

Arrangements were handled by Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel.
