August Eltiste, one of the early day settlers of Phillips County, passed away at  his home early Sunday evening August 29, 1948, at the age of 91 years, 10 months, and 28 days.

August Eltiste son of Christian Eltiste and Dorthea Risselhuber Eltiste was born October 1, 1856 at Burgsalach, Bavaria, Germany.  He was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran church in Germany.  He spent his early boyhood in Burgsalach and went to school there until he was 13 or 14 years old. The next few years were spent at Nurenbe3rg, where he learned the barber's trade. In 1872 he came to America and worked as a farm laborer near Nebraska City, Nebraska.

On March 11, 1879, he was united in marriage with Katherina Hahn. To this union were born four children. Two sons, Fred and Christ, and two daughters, Emma and Christine.

After he was married he spent several years farming near Nebraska City. In 1886 he came to Phillips county and settled down on a farm near Stuttgart, which was his home until he died.

Mr. Eltiste was well known and respected in the community in which he lived. He was active until the very end, only a few days before his death he, still worked some in his garden.

Emmanuel Lutheran church of Stuttgart, Kansas, pays tribute to its oldest member. Mr. Eltiste played an important role in the de3velopment of Emmanuel Lutheran church. For a number of years he served as a member of the Church Council.

Survivors are his two sons, Fred and Christ, and two daughters, Mrs. Henry Vogel and Mrs. Mike Miller, all of Phillips county. Also a foster-son, Harold Benjamin of Los Angeles, California; 7 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and a number of other relatives. Mrs. Eltiste preceded her husband in death July 29, 1947.
