Mrs. Clara Richard PASSES AWAY

FEBRUARY 6

 

 

Clara Richard, wife of Frank Richard, passed away at

the family home in Newport, Oregon on February 6, 1947.

She was the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Samuel Hoy

and was born in Ohio on September 9, 1867.

 

When she was fifteen years old she moved with her parents to South Dakota. In 1887 she was married to Frank Richard. In 1902 Mr. and Mrs. Richard with their

family moved to Lebanon, Oregon, where they resided

until three years ago, with the exception of six years spent

in Albany while Mr. Richard served as sheriff of Linn

county. In 1944 they moved to their present home in

Newport. Her husband survives her.

 

Four sons and four daughters were born to this union.

One son died in infancy. Another son, Bryan Carl, died

in France a casualty of World War I. The surviving

sons are Donald of Lebanon and Sam of Portland.

The daughters are Mrs. Edna Geil of Corvallis;

Mrs. Oscar Swander of Newport, Mrs. Ernest

Merchant of Lebanon and Mrs. Arthur Clyde of

McMinnville.

 

Besides her children Mrs. Richard leaves four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren,

two brothers and two sisters.

 

Her brothers are Rev. Wiley Hoy of North Dakota and

Attorney Harry G. Hoy of Portland. The sisters are

Mrs. Ida East and Mrs. Leslie Haskin of Newport.

 

When a young girl Mrs. Richard joined the Evangelical

church in South Dakota of which her father was pastor.

Frank Carl Richard, the former Chief of Police of Lebanon in the early 1900s, was appointed to fill in for Sheriff Dunlap, who was killed in the line of duty May 21, 1923. Richard, who also had served as a Deputy under Sheriff Kendall, went on to run for the office and served as Sheriff of Linn County until 1929.

Frank C. Richard

Funeral Services for Frank C. Richard, ex-sheriff

of Linn county and a Lebanon city police officer

30 years, were held at the Howe-Huston chapel Friday.

He passed away April 4, 1949,  in Newport. Mr. Richard

was born in Wisconsin in 1868, coming to Lebanon

in 1902.

 

Six children survive: Mrs. Edna Geil, Coraville;

Mrs. Oscar Swander, Newport; Don Richard and

Mrs. Ernest Merchant, Lebanon; Sam Richard,

Portland, and Mrs. Arthur Clyde, McMinnville,

Sisters are Mrs. Bert Meeks; Mrs. Lena Meutz,

Lebanon; and Mrs. Minnie Hoy, Brownville.

There are five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Additional Information on this census is that Clara was the mother of 5 Children, All of whom are still living,

it is therefore reasonable to believe that "Richard" is actually Samuel Hoy Richard, but his 1st name was not listed.

 

They are living next door to Clara's brother,

Wiley Hoy (b: Feb. 1870, OH), his wife Isabelle (b: Aug. 1878, Ireland)

and their son Maurice (b: Oct. 1898, SD)
