Deceased Who Passed Away At Byron, Was Native of Nemaha County and Well Known to Many People Here. Has Led Active and Useful Life.
John Torbeck, son of Reiner and Christena Torbeck, nee Dirks, was born in Nemaha county, March 28, 1884. Following a brief illness at his home, he departed this life Wednesday morning, February 23, at the age of 53 years, 10 months and 25 days.
He was baptized in early infancy and later given the benefit of religious instruction in the parochial school in his native county.
When a young man he moved to Byron, where he united with Zion Lutheran congregation on March 31. 1907. From 1931 to 1937 he gave faithful service to the congregation as a member of the church council. Since 1907 he had been continuously engaged in farming.
In 1910 he was united in marriage to Adelia Schleufer. This union was blessed with four children. One daughter, Helen, preceded him in death June 24, 1931.
Surviving to mourn his passing are his wife two sons, Erwin and Edwin, his daughter, Leona, and daughter-in-law, Mrs. Erwin Torbeck. He is also survived by seven sisters, all of whom live in this state; Mrs. Theta Marquart, Byron; Mrs. Hilka Malpert, Nora; Mrs. Christena Schleufer, Lincoln; Mrs. Augusta Schleufer, Nora; Mrs. Emma Oestmann, Auburn; Mrs. Dora Harms, Byron; and Mrs. Anna Kienker of Johnson; and three brothers, Fred and Herman of Johnson and Dick of Byron.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, February 28, at Zion Lutheran church near Deshler. The pastor, William Feller, spoke words of comfort and admonition in German on Romans: 6:23 and in English on I Thes: 4:13-14. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Ed Fintel, Henry Heipman, William Eickman, Richard Eickman, Arthur Pohlman and Herbert Pohlman.

Mrs. Adella Torbeck Passed Away At Deshler After Long Illness and Untimely Death is Mourned by Many Nemaha County Friends
Adelia Margaretha Torbeck, nee Schleufer, daughter of John and Sophie Schleufer, was born June 10, 1890 at Johnson, and departed this life on her birthday, Friday morning, June 10, at the age of 48 years.
She was baptized in early infancy by her pastor, Reverend J. H. Dirks, and she enjoyed the religious training of a German parochial school. She was confirmed by the same pastor March 27, 1904, at Saint John's Lutheran church in Benton precinct.
In 1907
she moved with her parents to Deshler, where the united in marriage to John Torbeck May 29, 1910. Their home was blessed with four children.
Her health began to fail about two years ago. Treatment at various places was resorted to, but relief was only temporary and efforts to restore her to health proved futile. She bore her sufferings patiently until the end. She was preceded in death by her father in 1928, her daughter, Helen, in 1931, and by her husband in February of this year.
Surviving to mourn her passing are her children, Edwin and wife, and Leona, all of Byron; one sister, Mrs. Mary Weers of Hebron; seven brothers; John Schleufer, Lincoln; George Schleufer, Milwaukee, Oregon; Henry Schleufer, Nora; Otto and Martin Schleufer, Byron, and Fred and Edward Schleufer, Deshler.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the home and Zion Lutheran church at Deshler and were conducted by pastor, Reverend William Feller. Appropriate words of consolation were based on Matthew 11:28 in German and Palms 23:4 in English. Interment was made in the church cemetery.
