THE PHILLIPS COUNTY REVIEW THURSDAY – DECEMBER 4, 1947
Henry Leonard Merklein, a son of John George Merklein and his wife, Maria Apollonia nee Preuss, was born April 5, 1870, at Hanover, Washington county, Kansas. In early infancy pious parents consecrated the little boy to the Lord in holy baptism. At the age of seven, Henry Merklein moved with his parents, to Phillips County where they settled on a farm west of Stuttgart. On this place the departed lived all the days of his life. April 20, 1884, having received due instruction in the way of salvation, he was confirmed in the Lutheran faith by the Rev. J. F. Dilges and so became a communicant member of Emmanuel Lutheran church. April 25, 1899 Henry Leonard Merklein was united in holy matrimony to Katharina Krafft. Eleven children were born to this union of whom three have preceded their father to eternity. The departed enjoyed good health all his life, almost up to the hour of his demise. Last Wednesday evening at about 10 o’clock he complained of heartburn presumably only a slight indisposition. In God’s unsearchable council this was to be the beginning of last sickness. Already on Thursday morning, November 27, 1947, at ten minutes after twelve the Lord called his servant out of this life. Henry Merklein was a staunch believing Christian, a good husband and loving father whose motto was, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” He was a faithful member of the Emmanuel Lutheran church who attended Divine services and holy communion regularly and diligently. For 15 years he had served his congregation as a member of the church council. Though death came suddenly, the summons did not find him unprepared. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife Mrs. Katharina Merklein; four sons, Edwin J., John G., Henry W., and their families, and Alvin; four daughters, Mrs. Martha Vogel, Mrs. Fred Eltiste, Mrs. Hilda Miller and their families, and Emilie; eighteen grandchildren; one brother, W. F. Merklein and family; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Merklein and family, and many other relative and friends. Henry Leonard Merklein had attained the good ripe age of 77 years, 7 months and 22 days. Interment was made Saturday, November 29, in the cemetery of Emmanuel Lutheran church of Stuttgart. May he rest in peace.

Obituary ۩ Merklein
Katharina Magdalena Krafft Merklein, daughter of the late Sebastian and Anna Wilderman Krafft was born May 13, 1878 at Waldmanshofen, Württemberg, Germany. She was baptized as an infant, and at the age of 13 was confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran Faith in the Lutheran Church of Waldmanshofen. At the age of 14 years, she came to the United States. She never desired to return to her native land, to a large extent because she was devoted to her immediate family. She was united in Holy Matrimony to Henry L. Merklein at Emmanuel Lutheran of Stuttgart on April 25, 1899. God blessed this union with 10 children; 6 sons and 4 daughters. Since coming to the United States, she lived in the Stuttgart community. On Thursday, October 19, she was admitted to the Phillips county hospital, having suffered a painful blood clot in one leg. It was here on Thursday, October 26, that the Lord called her to her to her eternal reward. She had reached the age of 89 years, 5 months and 13 days. She was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away November of 1947; two sons, Martin and Paul; 2 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. She leaves to mourn her death; 4 daughters, (Martha) Mrs. Alvin Vogel of Stuttgart, (Freda) Mrs. Ernest Eltiste of Phillipsburg, (Hilda) Mrs. Ellsworth Miller of Stuttgart, and Emilie of the home and 4 sons; Edwin of Stuttgart, John and Henry of Prairie View and Alvin of the home and many other relatives and friends. Memorial services were held Saturday, October 28 in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Richard Buchholz officiating. Norman Merklein and Alvin Veeh sang the hymns. Janice Weinman played the accompaniment and also accompanied for the hymn, "O Take My Hand< Dear Father" sung by the congregation. Casket bearers were Virgil Miller, Stanley Kinter, Billye Vanderplas, Ivan Heersink, Edward Tien and Lawrence Dietz. Interment was in the Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery.
