Mattis "Matthäus" Müller

On August 17, 1906, Matthäus Müller came to Johnson, Nebraska from Phillips County, Kansas to visit old friends. He has been gone from Johnson for about seven years and was very glad to be back. He went to Auburn on Monday.

On January 28, 1907, Matthäus Müller who resides three miles north of Stuttgart was killed Monday afternoon as he was returning home from Stuttgart where he had been doing some trading. He drove one horse hitched to a cart and is thought that the real cause of his death was by being kicked by by the horse, after which he was dragged for several miles. Coroner E.A. Nelson, was called to the home Northeast of Stuttgart Monday night where he held an inquest.

Matthäus Miller was about seventy years old and had been a resident of Phillips County for the past seven years. He leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his death. The funeral will be held today at 10 o'clock and the remains laid to rest in the Stuttgart Cemetery.

A telegram came Monday to Johnson that Matthäus Müller had died that evening at his home near Stuttgart, Kansas. Paul Eltiste and Mike Feistner left Tuesday morning to attend funeral.

Family Legend is that Matthäus Müller was murdered in a robbery that took place as he was returning home after selling livestock. Some years later it was reported that a man confessed on his death bed to the slaying of Matthäus Müller. An Article was printed in a newspaper according to legend but a copy of has not be found.

There is a conflict as to the correct spelling of the name Matthäus or Mattias. The spelling of Miller was originally Muller in Germany
